Just like we have our own way of doing most things here in Westchester, we tend to divorce in our own unique ways. Whether you live in a mansion and have millions in the bank, reside in a rental property and live paycheck to paycheck, have a house that is underwater and are in debt, or like most of us, are somewhere in between — Westchester divorce statistics differ from most other places in the country. Our high level of education accounts for part, but not all, of the below statistics.
Westchester Divorce Stats vs U.S. Averages
- Nationally, people tend to divorce on average, after 7 years. In Westchester, couples wait 18-20 years before they decide to divorce.
- The Westchester divorce rate is approximately half of the national average. But these divorces tend to be much more hostile and contentious than in most places.
- The average age that people divorce around the country is 31-33. Here, we divorce much later — often in our 40s and 50s.
- Our divorces take much longer to complete. In Westchester, it is not uncommon for a litigated divorce to take 2-5 years if the couple does not settle out of court.
So now you have the facts. In my previous blogs (Divorce Westchester Style — The Value of our Privacy, and Divorce Westchester Style — Our Children’s Bill of Rights), I have explained several reasons why divorce mediation makes so much sense in Westchester. In my next few blogs, I will let you know the two other major reasons that mediation is the preferred option for us “Westchesterites”. These include the huge amount of both money and time you will save by mediating your divorce. Most of my clients have thanked me for pointing out these reasons in our initial consultation. If you read my other blogs, I’m sure you will too.
